Hand Tree and Falling Construction Paper – What!?

20131116-002449.jpg

So… The past few days we have been working on fall crafts.

This is very easy to do. Most of my students used crayons. I had them trace their hands and part of their wrists and then colouring it in brown to resemble a tree. Afterwards, they were able to create a background. Grass, houses, flowers, clouds, etc. Once that was done, they tore construction paper into little pieces and glued them on as leaves.

Simple – creative – easy – fun.

Hope ya like it.

But anyway. Kids are asleep. And I’m pooped. Goodnight everyone! Xoxo

Fun learning

20131113-014240.jpg

Soooo… Today I cut out some felt veggies and fruits for my art class – lesson, for tomorrow.

Hopefully grade K will love it. I’ve already had 1st grade tell me they want to use the felt as well.

I figured with the harvest going on and that it’s close to Thanksgiving, that we would talk about cornucopias. 🙂

Some of my students don’t celebrate holidays… So… Drawing Christmas Trees, etc, are out of the question. However. My theory on that is, just because they don’t celebrate holidays, doesn’t mean they can’t learn about history.

I’ve had a few co-workers tell me, they have learned more in my art class even though you wouldn’t figure you’d learn it in such a class.

I say, art is fun, perspectively creative, and should always be educational.

So. The past few weeks have been about the harvesting of apples, pumpkins, and recently, corn. Plus the occasional Family Dinners that are themed, “North Carolina”, “Hawaii”, and this month “Texas” – chilli. So next week we will take a break and learn about Texas, do a few crafts, and eat some yummy chilli.

Included in those crafts will be some camels — for Texas. Figure that one out! I was pleasantly surprised to know they even related.

Ah. I love my job. What was great about today, after leaving my lovely job, was that I came home to a meal already cooked, plated, and set at the table. Great salad with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and chipotle ranch dressing, accompanied with some brown rice and quinoa, with baked mint chicken and mushrooms.

On another note… IT SNOWED!
I can’t believe we are already to the snow season. Where my daughter Emilie has been waiting several months to say, “We go see Nana, now???”

We finally became exhausted of telling her that we weren’t seeing Nana until Christmas, but at the age of 3…she has no concept of time. So we simply said: “When the snow comes down.”

So Snow, you came early! Shame on you. Now having to figure how to come up with a solution when she asks…

Anyway. Off to bed I go.

Goodnight. Xoxo

Kid Shopping

What a lovely day at work, bringing in an, at least, 7 foot tall corn stalk, roots and all.

My kiddos loved it! Though, a lot of them thought it was fake. Go figure. But, they learned a lot from reading some fun facts about corn, how it grows, being able to touch, see, and a few did smell the ears of corn…

Just glad they didn’t eat it.

So. I made them observe the corn stalk and then draw their perspective on what it looked like through their eyes.

One example:

Not too bad for a 2nd grader. 🙂

Can’t wait for the rest of my artsy fartsy crafts this week. – popcorn is in the near future.

After a fun day at work.

But, alas, I make my way to the kitchen to find my younger sister….

KID SHOPPING!! Haha.

Not really shopping for kids. It was a joke. My sister, Hannah, decided to push my daughter around in the shopping cart. As my mother said “they went shopping and found a peanut.” Because Kate’s nickname as an infant was Peanut.

Never a dull moment in this house of 12 people and 6 cats. :p

Hopefully tomorrow is as lively as today.

Happy Veterans Day!

The Colours of Decay and Death

20131111-193533.jpg

Fall is all around us. The magnificent glow of the leaves. The deep umbers, gold, yellow, ultimately, the colours of decay.

I never had that thought until I met Jack. He always thought it was funny, how everyone loves the colours of the leaves during fall. I asked him one day, “Why?” He answered, “Well you see, the leaves are dying… So…you like death?”

Hmmm… Yeah. I guess us Autumn lovers, love death.

But either way. I love Autumn. Being able to curl up in front of a fire, drinking hot cider. I however, am not a fan of the cold, damp weather. Nor, the time change.

I decided to take some photos of the “Death of Fall” for everyone. Enjoy.

Junk food holiday

20131111-122703.jpg

Well. So much for my junk food holiday. Back to eating right, working out, and staying fit/healthy.

Yummy salad with red wine vinegar, mushrooms, tomatoes, and cucumbers as of a few days ago.

Today, just finished running and doing some light weights, etc.

There’s chicken in the oven and about to cook up some quinoa. 🙂

My next To-Dos would be taking a shower, feeding the kids, and getting ready for work.

Yay. Xoxo
